My Creative Process

After my research and reading over the article I came to the understanding  that the article is about the theme of truth and how when looking in Trumps direction there are so many blurred lines that surrounds him which raises so many questions about him and his tactics, realising this I am going to base my design around the idea of truth and communication so I want the design to be simple, easy to read and clear cut, I am going to use typography no images because it would be a cliche with trump, as I feel his image has been over used and I just want to focus on the text and the simplicity of composition. I want to look towards Bauhaus and how they used shapes to create competitions for their posters but substitute the shapes for text so over all my design which will make it minimalist type of design, so I began writing what ever came into my head and putting them down on paper to get as many ideas as I could, this can be seen below.

looking back over my sketches I only had two decent ideas, so I went ahead and decided to play with typography on the computer to see if I could give them more direction, my idea was to create the front bit and base the theme off that so I have style through out the design, so after hours of experimentation and making templates here are some of my strongest ideas as templates seen below.

After much thought and reflection I decided to go with the very simplistic design of the box title, I feel it fits the article as well as the brief because first the hole design its sell looks similar to a American flag but if you look at the title you can read the full title but adding white to ‘can’ and ‘take’ it allows them to fall back, then creating a question instead so it has a second voice of like some one is directly asking Trump for the truth, I didn’t  want to use to much colour,  I liked the theme of keeping it white, black and grey the quote next to the title is something that is actually said in the article and sums up what I feel the article is about, so I placed it next to the title as a little introduction in some sense.

I feel confident with my theme and over all style I like the minimalist approach and I feel it gives clarity to the hole situation of Trump because I’ve read and looked at a couple of articles about Trump and they have already painted the picture of him before they even read the article but for me its about people taking an actual interest in the article and what it says I actually want them to read the article and decide from that rather than a image, so I tried to implant a simple introduction of the article in the title by using typography and composition and then creating interesting composition by using the article it self on the page but I’m excited to start producing work.

Animation – Work and Process

I was looking at the storyboard and was struggling to envision something what I could explore until Ellie Reid uploaded her alphabet and 3 second animation to are group chat it really help me spark some ideas I really liked what she produced and it was very interesting to see here colour choice and her over all loose typography, I was a massive fan of the colours and thought the colour pallet was great and it sparked some ideas, her text and colour pallet again also reminded me of the lyric music video of Ed Sheeran’s song ‘shape of you’  but here is her alphabet and 3 second animation :-

elleis apla

I think the style already has hit our target audience who are everyday people young and older who use the medical services but are not formally fond of others and need to be educated on them, I think the text is loose enough for children but as well adding some elements that are finer really help target the older audience we want to capture so combines the two in my view which is very clever I love the idea of heartbeat beat in the animation and think it should carry on through out the animation in a continuous line which I would like to explore further later on, but I took a look at the Ed Sheeran music video and loved some of the typography it produced in the video there are some great examples of kinetic typography, here are some frames I liked and the video itself :-

Looking at the video and text made me want to experiment with this style of really loose text trying to tell a story, so I decided to try do some easy experiments using illustrator and try recreate the style but explore in more with some very vibrant colours and make it look more like pop art – here are my experiments

Then looking at Ellie’s alphabet and Ed Sheerans music video I wanted to push my experimentation further by creating my own my own alphabet in illustrator but creating it more towards the music video style and my experiments, this was more just free hand and more playful than anything just to take it further so here is my alphabet and example :-

I wanted to push my experiment further and really play with the layers and colour I could get so I decided to play with my alphabet in photoshop playing with colour, opacity and how many layers I could get and managed to create some interesting things but the pink is the best I think

Christoph Niemann

I originally saw Christoph on a show I was watching he was so impressive to watch I really love some of his work and how he looks at the world then interprets that into his work, his playful mind, style allows him to tune in to the imperfections of the world and just simply play and have fun with his environment, the most impressing part I enjoyed watching was how he described his family life and the upbringing of his children through lego pieces so abstract yet so accurate, this made me want to adventure into his work more, the reason why I wanted to investigate Christopher further is because of his style and all the rang of media he used from digital to water colours, I was hoping he could help me open my eyes to creating my illustrations metaphors and approach them in a new clever way for my animation, I went to his website and found some great work on war which he has named ‘communised warfare’  where he has created these great small animations :-

I also read a great article of Christoph on ‘Its Nice That’ and it really was a good read, I would advise anyone a read it, but again it goes into further detail on how he produces and sees the world of abstraction, but adventuring deeper into his work again I discovered another great small project ‘ Google Doodles’ where its more suited towards our animation style and would like to try some illustrations in his style but here is his work and some of my sketches.

Ellie’s heartbeat

Screen Shot 2017-03-26 at 16.35.11

Looking back at Ellie’s working looked towards her heartbeat which then created an idea of keeping that heartbeat line through out the animation, my idea of using this method firstly allows a navigation tool as well being symbolic for a continuous lines of events that will lead to the end of the survival of our A&E departments so it all links and flows nicely too I then drew up a storyboard to show my idea which can be seen below :-

As you can see it keeps all the original content but adds the idea of a continuous line and is more based around that, I thought it was a nice effect in the animation and could be featured through out the animation and ephemera, I also wanted to do illustrations that would fit to the idea as well the animation the heartbeat already adds the refine simple line feature to it so I wanted to create simple line illustrations to go along with that heartbeat line and could also fit into my idea but first I needed some inspiration and recalled what David shown me in a lecture as an example of good practice and it was an animation called ‘Shape’ created by John Kelly :- – Link to his website

I agree that this animation is a brilliant example of best practice and the love simple abstract illustrations in it, I really love the scene where he use simple shapes to create children running into a building and how he animated them was a real inspiration to me this was able to help me create my illustrations based off his animation and how I could achieve creating a similar scene in my groups animation these are some images of the scene I’m referring to –

Moving away from the computer screen I started to look back to our storyboard and then decided to take the content I saw and then try sketching them out in this simplistic line design while keeping it formal but friendly here are my sketches –

Then once I was happy, I moved to the computer screen and digitalised them to illustrated them.

I then presented the idea and the illustrations to my team they liked the idea but felt the line should just feature in parts of the animation rather right the way through but they really did like my illustrations but only wanted to use the buildings, clouds/winds, figures and shine which was a positive outcome they then wanted to see how it would look with colours and how it could fit into the animation further so I suggested to say it could draw it self when the line comes out which they really liked the sound of so I started by drawing up a template of what the colours should be for the building which can be seen below as well Eillie featuring my phone in the work which can be seen to the right :-

house template

Now moved on to the animation it self and drew up a small storyboard to show how it would go which can be seen below :-

Scan 1

I then moved this onto after effects, thanks to Matt’s lectures I managed to animate the lines moving and gain the building to start drawing it self but their was some major holes within the design of the budding which was hard to gain back which I then seemed the advice of the French guy forgive me Im not tot sure of his name but he wasn’t able to direct me to a solution but he did try another method which I was able to do. The idea was to create a mask over the building then pull it away which could create the effect of the building drawing it self basically like putting tape over a image then reveal it slowly by taking the tape off I also tried youtube which didn’t help I spent three days experimenting

with this scene but none was successful but here was the results of my best efforts.

After the third day and still no results we was running out of time and Simeon was confident he could animate the scene so I handed it over to him and then started to do work on the ephemera’s which would be a poster and a app that help people learn what and where services are nearest to them.

This project has been testing for me due to after effects its a very broad program its just insane but it gets easier with practice and time which I have found out you need a lot of patients in animation from planning and taking it to the screen but my journey has a been fun I enjoyed exploring other artists work and how they approach their practice and how they used them over different platforms, I also enjoying seeing the results of are animation within the group and making great progress I am also grateful for Simeon for taking over and helping me get the project done which has taught me another lesson about group work that you can use others skills to help you move along the project and have asked Simeon for private lessons for the future so I can gain a better understanding of aftereffects and then be able to take this into my future practice.

Propaganda lecture

What is propaganda?

information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view.

Propaganda in general is  a message that has been created by a higher power to persuade you view on a certain situation or event, its usually used in political views which has accrued for many years especially in many wars and protests who want to boost their cause.

talk reflection

Today we looked at what is propaganda and what was produced in the Spanish Civil War that was propaganda, we went through the many different posters that was created during the war, we looked on how each side portrayed their cause as well perceived their enemies, this was very interesting to see and also great to map out how they use visual techniques to communicate these messages it was more visual aspects but I also liked the typography that was involved it seemed strong and had impact to the designs but as well in reflection it shows a fine example of what text and image can do,  moving on to more of what David showed us, it was really great to see, I really liked the images he displayed of protest that was from Occupy London, the images had pick signs of protest but I was more interested of the instant design but still communicated well, but I found the style of these signs very interesting, that they had this immediacy about them, as if it needed to be heard that minute, another great story was about a man who refused to pay his tax because he hated the council and turned his own home into a protest against the council, which looking at the images really shows the style of immediacy again which really did speak volumes, it gave me an insight into a new way of communicating. I didn’t really understand, but now have a more of an account on it, now reflecting it shows me it always doesn’t need to be well thought out, it can just be in the moment just get it down in a material and be heard it’s a really cool way to view communication.

Spanish Civil War Posters

I decide to invest some more time in the two war posters to really search and gain a better understanding on the communications skills that were involved in those historical pieces, hopefully in return, I would gain by having a better understanding in propaganda techniques as well communicating in a different way as well having a insight on how these posters were produced in the war.

Un Marino, un Heroe

In this poster you can see how they make the sailor a revolutionary hero as well looking further into this poster I also found out they had the same theme of visuals techniques for the front lines soldiers posters they produced, but the poster was produced to try and gain more applicants for the new navy the Republicans created in the war, the poster was created by a Spanish artist called Arturo Bellester Marco born in Valencia 1892 he grow up there, later on in his life he was an illustrator for several Valencia magazines but many consider his posters his most important pieces.

Snake and man

This is a more powerful expression in propaganda posters, so it shows the conflict of the war in a scene of a struggle between man and beast, red shows the revolutionary side of the conflict which is implemented on the purely naked man which also signifies the purity of their cause, the body is musclier and has a stronger status in relation to the snake which  the snake is more coiled and pushed back which makes a scene that the Republicans are on a pure strong cause as the Fascism forces are more venerable, the poster was produced by two committees one called Nacional del Trabajo (NDT) and Asociacion interncainal de loa Trabajadores (AIT) which had control over the Valencia production process and created these posters

Occupy London

After seeing Occupy London from our morning talk I went out to research them in more depth, trying to realise what they do and gain some strong imagery of their protests, upon my research I learned that Occupy London is a part of a global movement that was started in 2011 which was the year of protest, Occupy London decide to bring together the concerned citizens to fight for a new political/economic system that puts the people and environment first before profit, learning this aided me to understand in more depth of what I was looking at and see the beauty of this immediate style also seeing where David was coming from, but here are three images I think power my reflections.

We were asked to create a piece pf propaganda or protest sign, but the ideas was to focus more on the immediacy of the design as well it being able to communicate well, it didn’t need to be well thought out, the communication was key.

As a group we instantly decided to split in to three groups due the initial thought that we be able to accomplish more outcomes rather staying as one and only be able to complete one we also thought it be great to implement this method due to how loose the designs could be, create more, the three groups were myself and dan, Simone and Callum then James and Hedd, me and Dan decided to keep close to the idea of our Guernica where it can be created by expressive and created out of any material/ media which we could only get are hands on charcoal, paint, spray paint and cardboard , once settled on are message we then produced a very expressive background filled with colour and keeping within the propaganda posters used red to signify evolution then added white with our message on top, it was fun to be expressive again but as well take it off the screen and  gain more understanding of different media and have a more organic design process, we then came back together towards the end to see what we all produced which was great to see the difference in techniques and methods here are the outcomes.

Feedback was again silent not to much said except Davids view on that mine and Dans message was not to understandable but Callum’s and Simone’s word play was very strong and clever in response I thought we could take it further by combining the two designs and creating a stronger outcome.

Reflection on lecture

It was interesting to try a new method where we broke up into smaller teams, our theory did work, we produced more work for the time we had but even though each team had strengths I felt we also had weaknesses which by only staying together could be demolished, but it was a good experience trying this method out and will help me be more mindful when trying it in the future, however looking into propaganda has help me understand a different way that communication can work but I say its a more darker form of communication but it still has a method and structure and was great learning, experience I am looking towards the future and how these methods can be implicated.

For this task I was asked to create an ephemera 16 page booklet for a fake event that would be hosted by DesignBoom. This event was called Super 7 and is about celebrating the best in graphic design, the book will be directed towards graphic designers and convey the meaning from DesignBoom, here is my design process for the book…

I knew what typeface I wanted to use,  because I was already inspired from the NMD project I saw on Behance, the typeface  I used was Futura, expanding from that I wanted to to experiment with spacing between letters and breaking up words. The idea was to see how braking up the letters effected the legibility and to how it conveyed to the reader,  understanding this, I wanted to see how far I could take it without loosing legibility, you can see the results later in my post.

Taking my research into DesignBoom magazines, I could see it was technical,  in a sense playful and modern, so I wanted to capture this in my design. My starting point was lines because it is modern and simple to read, but I wanted to have another look within the magazines to get some inspiration, looking through the architectural images I noticed that some of the designs had a thiner and thicker lines featured in the work, which I then took and start playing around with. After some successful compositions, I decided to mix my typography in with my thiner and thicker lines then started experimenting between the two, by using tension between the lines and typography. I progressed further by using  tension and putting it  into a composition, which became my front cover, which in my opinion shows that the event is modern, playful and technical, that fits into the idea of DesignBoom magazines.

For each spread I took components from the front cover and played around with them, using composition, tension and layering. This also allowed me to be experimental with each spread, by using components from the front cover it allowed me to stay consistent as well as being playful with my design, you can  see the effect of this throughout my book. The only issue I had with my book  was there was to much information, especially for Jessica Walsh, it really did limit the experimental side of the book, which frustrated me but I played around with the design and was able to find answers to the problems, I had the right balance of  page and information on each spread.

During my journey through the design process of this booklet I realised over time how limited and refined the actual design would be, which frustrated me, so I found a way to react to these frustrating limitations. I didn’t like the paper I was originally given, so I purchased my own pink paper, which felt had good value and liked. My second limitation was the colour pallet which I again I was not happy with, using black/white on coloured paper. So I rebelled against this rule and decided to use a darker blue which made a really beautiful partnership.

Printing my book was a real learning curve, due to all the problems I faced,  firstly being unable to print at home, then unable to do it in uni because it had the old version of indesign and then taking it to the print studio that kept jamming because the paper was to thick, only till I brought this issue to Neil, he was able to provide me with the answer to my problem for home printing, the solution was that I was printing on long side binding and really I should be printing on short side binding, learning this allowed me to finally print my book with no problems and move onto binding it with staples which is suitable since its a ephemera booklet, here is the final booklet for DesignBoom…..

Today we learnt about expressive typography which was for me a really interesting lecture, I have touched on this before but not to the extent of producing work the way we did today. So we listened to an audio clip of someone talking, Then listening to the way he spoke and emphasised things within his speech and to try to portray that into type by using ink and a paint brush and just simply listen to what he’s saying, Heres an example of what I produced while listening to a small dialog of audio from Oscar Wilde where he said “I have nothing to declare except my genius”

forgive my spelling…

As I grow as a designer I am gaining a stronger understanding of typography which enables me to portray meaning into my work and have the opportunity to create all these messages by simply making a word bigger than another which makes it dominant in a series of words on a page, which can really impact the viewers view on that word and message and gain a section from that which to me shows me as a designer what impact I could have on the world or a persons life style.

For this brief we were asked to use the work of Hockney to inspire us to create a piece of work in a group of three that expresses a journey or collaboration to take our photos. I teamed up with Callum and George who became our model for this shoot. So we went a small trek around the building to find a prop or area we could use to express our journey. We came to this room which contained two ladders which had writing on the wall. So our idea was to use show the journey of George climbing up and down the ladder writing this message on the wall but using the photo links. So we took photos of him climbing up and down the ladder from one angle, once we traded the image we decided to go our own ways to create our individual version to then take back to show and see which one to take forward which then we decided to carry on with my version. My method was to start on a plain canvas then begin constructing the journey by using different images taken at different times, then forming it into one image of a single moment. So you see a moment but actually gives you more of an insight to the journey. Here is my process of the image  and the last large image is the out come….

So. For this task we were given near enough the same project but this time I had been given specific sizes to keep to, so again I chose Architecture but Sculpture as my second subject. Here is the list of sizes we were given…

What I decided to do was to turn it into centimetres so I could draw out the shapes so I would know what kind of photos I could take and what to consider when taking my images…

I now decided where I would take my images and did some research online so I came to the decision to do my photo session in the Cardiff Museum due to the great architecture features in the main areas. They have a fine collection of sculptures which can make great photo to experiment with in photoshop.

Once I had my photos from my session I decided how I should approach using photoshop on them. My method was ‘giving more by less’ just simplifying the image so I didn’t loose the original image by chucking too much at it. I started by turning the images into grey scale then applying duotone, then using white as a base colour for both series, then I chose different colours starting with architecture choosing a duller blue which seemed a nice touch but it was missing the texture in the photo so I decided to use the invert tool on the series, which then really brought the textures in each photo for architecture which I think then made a nice series. Now moving on to the sculpture series I approached it the same starting with where I had the white base colour but looking at the sculpture photos. Taking in account that the sculptures have a proud history of strong looking men.I decided to use a older looking type of red which in Roman times, red showed power so this was the reason for my choice of colour. I looked at the outcomes but felt it was to standard for my liking so I experimented with layers and opacity on each photo which I think gave the photo or canvas of the image much more to it and had more to consider. Here are the out comes for both series….
